Hannah Mills and Eilidh McIntyre won the opening race of the 470 World Championships in Enoshima, Japan.
After a delay for the wind to settle, racing finally got underway on day 2 of the championship.
Mills and McIntyre finished ahead of Afrodite Zegers and Lobke Berkhout of Holland, with Spain’s Silvia Mas Depares and Patricia Cantero taking third.
Racing was again delayed today and the women eventually started in 6 to 8 knots of breeze at the second attempt.
Reality set in for the British pair in the second race where they finished down in 18th.
Winners were Agnieszka Skrypulec and Jolanta Ogar of Poland, with second Ai Kondo Yoshida and Miho Yoshioka of Japan and third Depares and Cantero.
This put Spain’s Depares and Cantero top of the leaderboard with 6 points, and Mills and McIntyre in 5th place with 19 points.
The men have also completed their first flight races.
After two qualification races for each flight, four teams are tied on 8 points at the top of the men’s leaderboard:
Balazs and Zsombor Gyapas HUN, Keiju Okada and Jumpei Hokazono JPN, Hippolyte Machetti and Sidoine Dantes FRA, and Matt Belcher and Will Ryan AUS.
Britain’s Luke Patience and Chris Grube (10, 23) are in 24th place with 33 points.
