Andy Beadsworth, Ali Tezdiker and Simon Fry finished the Pre-World, Australasian Championship event with a five point overall lead.
Two 8th place finishes were enough for Beadsworth, Tezdiker and Fry sailing TUR 1212 Provezza Dragon to confirm thier overall pre-world event victory, and their first Prince Philip Cup win at the Royal Freshwater Bay YC on Wednesday.
Australia’s William Packer, Julian Harding and Jock Packer finished in second place with a 9 and 10, and are also winners of the Corinthian trophy. Anatoly Loginov, Vadim Statsenko and Alexander Shalagin of Russia added two 3rd place finishes to complete the podium.
Winners on the final day were Charlotte and Juliette Ten Wold, Pedro Andrade and Janka Holan of the Netherlands, sailing NED411 Olinghi, with back-to-back wins in race 7 and 8, to finish in ninth place overall.
Grant Gordon, Ruairidh Scott, Sophia Weguelin and James Williamson, sailing GBR 820 Louise Racing, were the best placed British team, finishing in fifth overall despite counting a DNS.
Team Provezza with Gordon Ingate
The trophy presentation was made that much more special by the sight of Dragon legend Gordon ‘wingnut’ Ingate regalling his long history of sailing the class and how he won his first Prince Philip Cup before most people in the room were born!
At the young age of 92 years, Gordon handed out the trophies with a personal touch as the room remained silent lapping up every word he said. A special moment indeed to bring what has been an outstanding event to a close.
The fleet now enjoy a days break and re-coup before the start of the 2019 Dragon World Championships that take place with racing every day from Friday 4 – Weds 9 January.
