Phil Sharp leads first solo race of the season

The first event of the year and one of the main solo preparation races ahead of November’s Route du Rhum transatlantic race, has set sail. Imerys Clean Energy, Phil Sharp -

At 14:02 local time Monday 14 Class 40s crossed the start line of the 1,000 Milles des Sables off Port Olona, Les Sables d’Olonne.

The race route, announced just yesterday, will take the solo skippers on a triangular course down to Gijon, Spain and up to Wolf Rock off Land’s End, before returning to Les Sables d’Olonne.

Phil Sharp: “At the moment the forecast is quite variable with predominantly light to medium winds, however, currently just west of Finisterre there is a storm forecast for Friday, which could definitely be a game changer if this develops in our direction."

“I think it’s going to be a good test to see how Imerys Clean Energy performs against the newer models in solo configuration, so it will be interesting to see how the race unfolds.” Phil continued."
