Jerry Hill leads the UK Laser SB3 National Championships after day 2 . . .
At the end of the second day of racing at the Neilson Active Holiday UK Laser SB3 National Championships, the World Champion, Jerry Hill is repeating his form from Italy earlier this summer and leads the fleet at the halfway stage of the regatta. Andy Oddie, ‘In Your Pocket’ lies second, his best result so far in the fleet while David Hudson and the crew of Spirt of Cape Town lie in third.

Day 2 started with a steady 10 knots of wind off the coast of Brighton this morning. However, as the day progressed, the wind became less settled and eventually dropped leaving the Race Officer with a tricky job in hand. Rob Gullan and the Parkway Pirates won the first race of the day, with Rola Trac in second and Spirt of Cape Town in third place.

A number of boats were caught out in Race 2 with the massive shift, but Chris Darling, George Yeomans and Andy Shaw managed to battle their way to the front of the fleet and took a well deserved bullet, with ‘In Your Pocket’ second and ‘3 Sad Old Blokes’ finishing third. Rola Trac and Spirit of Cape Town both lost out in Race 2 and finished in the late-teens.

Day 1 of the Laser SB3 UK Nationals at Brighton . . .

The Laser SB3 fleet returned to the south coast of the UK Wednesday for the first day of racing at the 2010 Neilson Active Holiday Laser SB3 National Championships. 41 boats are taking part in the event, based in Brighton Marina.

After three races the fleet is lead by David Hudson (Spirit of Cape Town) followed by Craig Burlton (Gill Race Team) and Geoff Carveth (Core Elements) in third.

Bertrand clinches the Etchells World Championship at last . . .
After around twenty years of trying, today Australian sailing legend John Bertrand finally won the Etchells World Championship. Bertrand and his crew, Andrew Palfrey and Tom Slingsby, clinched the title in some style here in Howth, Ireland with an impressive win in the first of the two races sailed on the final day of the championship.

Bertrand himself told us earlier in the week 'We Aussies, like a bit of breeze' and today's solid eighteen to twenty knot conditions clearly suited the new World Champion. After getting away cleanly from the congested start line, at first windward mark Bertrand was able to tack to just leeward of a seven boat pack which storming in on the starboard layline and round in second position.

For much of the first downwind leg it was impossible to be certain which of the leading six boats was going to round the gate first. As the pack approached the leeward marks line abreast, it was Bertrand who managed to gain the inside overlap in the final few lengths to take the lead. From then on Bertrand, Palfrey and Slingsby were in total control and went on to extend their lead to almost a minute by the finish. His result meant that Bertrand could not be caught overall and the delighted Aussie crew headed for home.

Flying 15 Euros show-down blown away in La Rochelle . . .
Steve Goacher and Phil Evans retained their Flying 15 European title a little earlier than they expected when all racing was cancelled on the final day at La Rochelle.

What had looked like it would be an interesting final day, with four teams within reach of the title, was scuppered by 40 mph gale force winds. The heavy rain soon passed but the wind persisted as did an official weather warning. In the end the Race Officer John Coveney had little choice but to abandon the day’s racing.

Uka Uka Racing Win Marinepool Melges 24 World Championship . . .
Despite the willingness of both the competitors and the Race Committee to do everything possible to complete the final two races of the 2010 Marinepool Melges 24 World Championship in Tallin, Estonia, the wind refused to make an appearance on the final day.

After a patient wait of several hours, the one painfully light airs race which did get under way had to be abandoned part way down the first downwind leg. The lack of any racing today, meant that the placings from the previous day remained unaffected, with Italian helm Lorenzo Bressani on Uka Uka Racing confirmed as the 2010 Melges 24 World Champion.

Norway's Kristian Nergaard on Baghdad took second place overall, ahead of Italy's Alberto Bolzan on Hurricane Murphy & Nye in third. In the closely fought Corinthian Division, Norway's Oyvind Peder Jahre on Storm Capital Sail Racing Team were crowned 2010 Melges 24 Corinthian World Champions, ahead of Estonian Tonu Toniste on Lenny in second and Italian Marco Schirato on La Besa in third.

Martin Byrne Claims Dragon Irish Championship . . .
Martin Byrne claimed the Dragon class 2010 Irish Championship, sponsored by Belfast Harbour, supported by North Down Borough Council and hosted by the Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club (RNIYC) in Cultra from 22 to 25 July.

From the first day Dublin's Martin Byrne sailing Jaguar put his stamp on the regatta taking third place in the opening race followed by a win in race two. On day two he and crewmen Adam Winkleman and Pedro Andrade consolidated that lead with a fourth and another win and by day three they had the regatta well and truly under their control. Whilst Martin had first place all sewn up and was able to relax and enjoy the final race of the series, the battle for second and third kept everyone on tenterhooks until the finish line.

Going into that final race Don O'Donoghue, crewed by Gwen Chapelain and Dallas Caskey aboard Seabird; Andrew Craig crewed by Mark Pettitt and Brian Matthews aboard Chimera; and Klaus Diederichs crewed by Andy Beadsworth and Jamie Lea aboard Fever, all had the potential to fill those final podium slots. O'Donoghue sat in second place three points clear of Craig but with a 15 point discard, Craig counted 16 points and discarded a ninth and Diederichs was on 22 points and discarded an 11th.

In the final race as the boats came to the finish line Craig took first place, Diederichs second, and O'Donoghue third. In the overall standings O'Donoghue therefore claimed second place, Craig third and Deiderichs fourth. A relaxed and very happy Martin Byrne crossed the line in fourth place to confirm his overall victory in the regatta.

Dragon - Irish Nationals, Leading scores (18 entries)
1 Jaguar - IRL201 - Martin Byrne, Adam Winkleman, Pedro Andrade - 14 pts
2 Seabird - IRL204 - Don O'Donoghue, Gwen Chapelain, Dallas Caskey - 19 pts

4 Fever - GBR758 - Klaus Diederichs, Andy Beadsworth, Jamie Lea - 24 pts
5 Kin - IRL212 - Simon Brien, David Gomes, David Good - 40 pts
