Goacher and Owen take Aussie Flying 15 title . . .
Final day of the Australian Flying Fifteen Championship and Britain’s triple world champion Steve Goacher who teamed up with the winning skipper from last year’s Flying Fifteen nationals, Matt Owen, secured the Golden Anniversary title.

While Goacher and Owen made sure that Alan Bax and Simon Childs did not finish more than three places ahead of them, both finishing worse than seventh. Adele Jackson and Dean McAullay took the final race win ahead of Hawkins/Jones and Yu/Nelson, and were best all-Australian crew in fourth place overall.

The result was a huge triumph for the three visiting British crews, who took out the first three placings in the regatta. The trio showed remarkable consistency, so much so that the worst placing for any of them was a fifteenth in the 58 boat fleet. Individual brilliance by several of the Australians from time to time was offset by the odd disaster in their scoreline and even with the benefit of two drops, they could not match the visitors.

Adam Semple and Lisa Greeve won the silver fleet trophy with a four point buffer over Hank Heimans and Alan Sharpe, while Ray Ellard and Ken Treharne won the Classic championship.

Artemis Racing take RC44 World Championships . . .
It was Katusha (RUS), steered by Steve Howe this week with Francesco Bruni calling the shots, who relished the windier conditions in Puerto Calero, Lanzarote. The team did not put a foot wrong, as the wind touched 23 knots at times, storming to victory in every race. But even three wins was not enough to get close to the RC44 World Championship leaders Artemis Racing (SWE).

The Swedish team slotted in a fourth and then a second giving themselves a six point lead going into the final race of the Championships, to be assured victory they needed to finish in the top seven in the final race of the day. They started well but as they approached the windward mark they had it all on, Ironbound were pushing Katusha for the lead and Artemis Racing were eighth. By the finish Torbjorn Tornqvist, Morgan Larson and the team had gained one place to seventh, enough to give them the title by two points.

The Brits win Pan American Viper 640 Championship series . . .
The Viper 640 is one of the fastest growing sports boat in North America. Originally designed in 1998 it has gone through a resurgence in recent years when it was modernised by Rondar Boats based in the UK working closely with the very active class association. The 2011 North American Championships in Sarnia Canada was the final event in the EFG Pan American Series. This outcome for both events in 2011 all came down to the last race.

The Brits, Glyn Locke (Isle of Wight), David Chapman (Royal Sydney), and Ian Nicholson (Hayling Island SC) win the Pan American Viper Championship series held at the Sarnia Yacht Club at the South West corner of Lake Huron. The Blue Water Bridge crossing the US Canadian border at Point Edward is aptly named. The lake has clear and surprisingly blue water bordered by sandy beaches. The resemblance to a fresh water version of the Caribbean stopped abruptly with woolly hats and thermal underwear to cope with temperatures that fell steadily as the week progressed. It was beautiful though.

The weather served up one awesome finale. The breeze was 18 knots with steepening waves at the warning signal. It was 20 knots at the gun and built to 25+ knots during the race.

Jackpot owned the pin at the start with the Brits on their weather hip. Mambo Kings started near the committee boat. The Texans were late at the boat after halyard problems in the pre start. It was breeze up and game on for the final show down.

The Brits, Glyn Locke, David Chapman and Ian Nicholson finished the race in second, the regatta in fourth and won the Pan American Championship series. Jackpot (Canada) - Brad Boston, Lee Shuckerow and Erik Vinglass - held their lead to become three time North American Champions. Mambo Kings came fourth across the final line, third in the North Americans and second in the pan Americans. Tony Chapman (GBR) finished the race and the regatta in fifth and collected the adjusted handicap award in the Pan Ams.

Boisterous opening weekend at Hamble Winter Series . . .
A boisterous opening weekend for 30th Anniversary Garmin Hamble Winter Series with some exciting, blustery conditions. Saturday was the first day of the new-format Autumn Championships, with racing for SB3, J80, J109 and Quarter Ton classes on two courses. Winds of 12-18 knots provided ideal, if gusty racing conditions. The day wasn’t short of drama, with one SB3 losing her rig and a J80 shredding her kite close to a lee shore. There were also a few retirements in the Quarter Ton class by the end of the day.

In the SB3s, Geoff Carveth and his crew had a near-perfect score of firsts, spoiled only by a second place in race 3 when Tich Summers in Chill Pill snuck ahead to take the bullet. After a shaky start in the J80 class, Rob Larke in J2X found his form and won four races in a row, and is sitting in first place overall, ahead of J.A.T, sailed by Phil Taylor.

In the Quarter Tonners, Ian Southworth and Liz Rushall’s Whiskers is in the lead with 5 bullets, ahead of Mike Webb in Flashheart and Howard Sellers in Bullet. Stephen Tapper’s Stalker currently leads the J109 class, equal on points with Richard and Valerie Griffith’s OutraJeous.

Sunday also saw the first day of racing for the Black Fleet in the main series, with two races scheduled. PRO Jamie Wilkinson set a range of windward-leeward courses for the different classes.

The first race saw 17-20 knots of breeze and a classic wind-over-tide chop which made for some impressive surfing on the downwind leg. In IRC 0, Mark Devereux’s Swan 42 Brevity won, while in IRC1 Ivan Trotman’s J122 Jolou led the fleet.

In IRC 2, Michael Brough’s Match 38 Steady Barker took the top spot. J-97 Jika Jika was first in IRC 3, while Chris and Vanessa Choules on With Alacrity romped home in fine style to win the Sigma 38 class. In IRC4, Impala 28 Polly was first, and in the mixed Sportsboat class, Hunter 707 Turbulence did well to survive the by now quite extreme conditions and win her class.

By the second race, the wind, now in the south-west, was building, with regular gusts of 25 knots. Many fleets saw the winners of race one come out on top again, with Brevity, Jika Jika, With Alacrity and Polly all winning their respective classes. Visit Malta Puma won the second race in IRC1, and in IRC2, Elan 37 Elaine finished ahead of X362 Extra Djinn to take the top spot. Big Boys Toys was the sole survivor of race 2 in the Sportsboat fleet and finished first in fine style.
