First Ever Melges 14 USA Nationals

Harry Melges IV takes the first Melges 14 US National Championship title.

After nine races, Melges beat out Eddie Cox by a two point margin. Chapman Petersen rounded out the podium.

With the announcement that the Melges 14 dinghy has been short listed by World Sailing as a possible replacement the Olympic Men and Women One Person Dinghy (Laser), it is interesting to look at the class in its home championship.

The Melges 14 was released in 2015, and this was the first Melges 14 dinghy US National Championship, with a fleet of 36 boats at the Lake Geneva YC, Wisconsin.

Melges, Cox and Petersen dominated the series, winning all nine races between them, with Melges winning five races.

Racing was close with the title decided in the final race, with just one point separating each of the top three: Melges with 22, Cox with 23 and Petersen with 24.

Melges won the final race with Cox second, Richard Chapman taking third, Clifford Porter fourth and Petersen fifth. Overall the top three finished 29 points clear of fourth placed Chapman.

Peyton Ankers finished one place ahead of Jennifer Canestra to earn Top Woman.

Joey Plummer was the top finishing Blue Rig, and Victor Larimer earned the title in the Red Rig.
