Ainslie AC Team join GC32 Racing Tour

As previously noted here . . . Britain’s America’s Cup team, INEOS TEAM UK, is to join the 2018 GC32 Racing Tour

Four-time Olympic gold medallist Ben Ainslie will be at the helm for the team’s debut in the 32ft foiling catamarans, later this month at the GC32 Lagos Cup in Portugal for the second event of the European tour over 27 June – 1 July.

Originally the plan was for the British America's Cup Team to race on the TP52 circuit, but that arrangement was dumped when Jim Ratcliffe, founder and chairman of Ineos, put his INEOS company money behind the team and ousted Land Rover and the private backers.

Just to emphasise the point, the new INEOS Team UK CG32 is badged with the Projekt Grenadier logo - Jim Ratcliffe's £600 million version of the defunct Land Rover Defender.

Apparently the foiling aspect and short, high speed racing is considered more appropriate to the next America's challenge, despite it being on a monohull platform.

Skipper Ben Ainslie: “The GC32 is a high-performance foiling multihull, so it’s not the monohull we have in the America’s Cup but being out on the foiling circuit gives the sailing team an opportunity to get out and race together, put ourselves under pressure as well as get to grips with technique and boat handling which we hope will put us in good stead for the America’s Cup World Series which restarts in 2019."

Two new signing for the team include two-times America’s Cup winner Joey Newton (AUS/GBR) as jib trimmer, and Australian Olympic gold and silver medallist, Iain Jensen joining as a mainsail trimmer.

Completing the line-up will be two times America’s Cup World Series winner, Nick Hutton and 2017 Red Bull Youth America’s Cup Champion, Neil Hunter as float.

After Portugal the team will continue on the GC32 Racing Tour to compete at events in Palma de Mallorca, Spain (July/ August), Sardinia, Italy (September) with the 2018 circuit concluding in Toulon, France in October.
