Volvo Ocean Race boats start race 2 of Leg Zero

The Volvo Ocean Race fleet started race 2 - The Rolex Fastnet Race - of their Leg Zero series from Cowes on Sunday 6 August.

MAPFRE had a great start on the north side of the start line but was chased down by Nikata, the biggest boat in the fleet at 115 feet.

Turn the Tide on Plastic good port tack start at the Cowes shore end and just ducked Dongfeng and Mapfre.

Dongfeng holding an advantage over Mapfre and Turn the Tide as they continued towards the Needles.

As the boats reached the famous chalky cliffs of the Needles, Dongfeng led by 0.3 nm from Vestas 11th Hour Racing, with MAPFRE in third.

Team AkzoNobel, Team Brunel, Team Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag and Turn the Tide on Plastic were closely grouped behind, with only 0.6 nm separating the entire fleet.

The boats are due at the Fastnet Rock at around 06:00 UTC on Tuesday, whereupon they will sail downwind in conditions building from 15-20 knots before a reach to the finish in Plymouth late on Tuesday night.
