420 Open Europeans - Brits score well on first day

The 179 teams competing at the 420 Open European Championships spent the morning ashore as light wind postponed the scheduled start.

When racing finally started the 77 teams in the 420 Open event were split into yellow and blue fleets for the 6 race qualification series.

Two races down and Britain’s Alex Smallwood and Ross Thompson (2,4) are tied on 6 points with Portugal’s Manuel and Gonçalo Ramos.

Third are Greece’s Telis Athanasopoulos Yogo and Dimitris Tassios on 7 points.

2. Alex SMALLWOOD/Ross THOMPSON (GBR 55015) - 6 pts
3. Telis ATHANASOPOULOS YOGO/Dimitris TASSIOS (GRE 56371) - 7 pts
4. Otto HENRY/Romë FEATHERSTONE (AUS 56160) - 8 pts
5. Enzo BALANGER/Victor MAS (FRA 56030) - 9 pts

In the women's event, 57 teams from 16 nations faced off for the first day of racing.

It was a good day for the USA who are fielding a full quota of seven Ladies teams, combining a mix of experiences and rookies racing their first 420 Championship.

The USA holds 1st and 2nd overall with Emma Kaneti and Ciara Rodriguez-Horan (4,2), and Carmen Cowles and Emma Cowles (9,1) respectively.

Third to Spain’s Julia Miñana and Silvia Sebastia (3,9) tied on 12 points with Sofie Schone and Line Johanna Thielemann of Germany.

Best GBR pair are Hatty Morsley and Pippa Cropley (10,19) in 14th place.

1. Emma KANETI/Ciara RODRIGUEZ-HORAN (USA 54066) - 6 pts
2. Carmen COWLES/Emma COWLES (USA 56365) - 10 pts
3. Julia MIÑANA/Silvia SEBASTIA (ESP 55495) - 12 pts
4. Sofie SCHÖNE/Line Johanna THIELEMANN (GER 56064) - 12 pts
5. Jessie KAMPMAN/Léa SIBERTIN-BLANC (FRA 55896) - 15 pts

The 45 entries in the under-17 fleet are racing a 12-race series.

Leaders are Italy’s Demetrio Sposato and Gabriele Centrone (1,3) with 4 points, with second Britain's Rhys Lewis and Drew Wright (3,5).

Third are Pablo Ruiz and Miguel Martinez of Spain (12,1).

Top girls team are Britain’s Julia Mellers and Ellen Main (13,4) in 6th overall.
