Emirates Team New Zealand edged the start to lead at Mark 1 from Land Rover BAR. After gate 2 at the first tack, BAR suffered a break in their wing and came to a halt.

Ben Ainslie retired the boat to give them a chance to try and get the boat repaired for their second race, which will be after the first Artemis v Softbank Japan race.

Ainslie is saying that they will have to change to their spare wing and they only have 40 minutes to complete the change and get back for their second race with ETNZ.

Adding to the problem is the danger of the wing breaking more as they get back into the dock to change wings.

British boat is lifted out for the day

Land Rover BAR have retired from the 2nd race, they will not be able to turn-round the Mast change in time - They are finished for the day.

Emirates Team New Zealand will claim a sail-over win in R2 to take a 2 - 0 lead over BAR.

In the first race between Artemis and Softbank Japan, Japan took the win despite Artemis leading at the first mark. They won by 23 seconds.

The second race between Sweden and Japan looked to be going to Softbank Japan when they pulled out to a 300 m lead.

But then an error in a tack by Japan let Artemis back in and at gate 5 they led by 5 secs from Softbank.

Artemis led round mark 6 to storm to the finish with a 29 second lead and were back in the game, with score at 1 -1.
