Sailing World Cup - Miami Day 1

Early results from Miami, where the first Sailing World Cup of 2017 got underway, looked good for the British Sailing Team in the opening races, but ended more mundanely

Getting off to a good start was Emma Wilson, in the Women's RS:X event with 4, 2, 2, placed second overall, tied on points for the lead with Hei Man H V Chan of Hong Kong.

In the Nacra17, Lorenzo Bressani and Caterina Banti of Italy held off the Brits. Tom Phipps and Nicola Boniface are in 2nd and John Gimson and Anna Burnet 3rd.

In the Women's 470, Sophie Weguelin and Eilidh McIntyre finished 2nd in the opening race and then took a 4th. They are second overall behind Afrodite Zegers and Anneloes van Veen of Holland. Amy Seabright and Anna Carpenter are 6th.

In the men's 470, Kazuto Doi and Naoya Kimura of Japan won the first race, then took 4th in race 2. They lead from Giacomo Ferrari and Giulio Calabro of Italy. Martin Wrigley and Chris Grrube are 21st.

In the Men's 49er, Dylan Fletcher and Stuart Bithell fluffed the first race with a 17 but recovered with a win in race 2 and then a 4th. They are 2nd overall. Lucas Rual and and Emile Amoros of France lead (2, 2, 16).

Brazil's Robert Scheidt and Gabriel Borges had a low key start to their 49er career move with a 19, 23,18 to place 22nd of 26.

Not a great start for Nick Thompson in the Laser, but a 7 and 3 was enough to put him 2nd behind leader Karl-Martin Rammo (1, 4) of Estonia. Looks like a high scoring day, with Mike Beckett (17, 6) placing 6th.

Tighter scoring in the Finn event where Alican Kaynar of Turkey leads after a 2, 1. Jorge Zarif of Brazil (1, 4) is second and Ben Cornish (3, 2) is third, and Peter McCoy (10, 7) is 6th.

Overall not a bad start for the British Team, with the expected names placing well in the Nacra17, 49er, Laser, Women's 470, women's RS:X and Finn.

Off the pace in the Radial, 49erFX, men's RS:X and 470 where there is little depth when the prime players are absent.

Of course this is early in the professional season and most are returning to full-on competition after Rio, so we can expect the rust to be knocked off as the week progresses.
