Start of the Vendée Globe Sunday 6 November

The crowds were out early this morning in Les Sables to watch the sailors leave the Vendée Globe pontoon for the start area.

29 skippers will be setting sail from Les Sables d’Olonne for the eighth edition of the Vendée Globe at 12:02 hrs UTC on Sunday 6 November.

There are ten different nationalities among the 29 entrants, a record in the history of the Vende´e Globe.

Britain's Alex Thomson on Hugo Boss is taking part in his fourth Vendée Globe. He finished third in the least edition.

The race is officially 24,020 miles or 40,075 kilometres – the theoretical distance.

The leaders should complete the race in around 80 days. The record is 78 days, 2 hours and 16 minutes in 2013, by François Gabart.

Only Gabart and Armel Le Cléac’h (also in 2013) have completed the Vendée Globe in less than 80 days, the legendary time it took Philéas Fogg.

Most of the competitors will sail more, sometimes even more than 52,000 km to avoid icebergs and areas of high pressure (where there are light winds).

Live coverage of the start will be from 11:30 to 12:30 hrs UTC in English and French.
