Happening this weekend - A Sailing Race and a Sailing Conference

Two major events get underway this weekend. The Vendee Globe and World Sailing's Annual Conference.

Barcelona, Spain will host sailing's annual conference from Saturday 5 November, with 700 delegates from International Class Associations, Member National Authorities officials and Committee Members.

In addition there will be Event Organizers, Boat Manufacturers, the Media and self-important others riding on the social whirl and opportunity to network.

Major points of interest to the general sailing enthusiast are the election of a new President and Vice President, the discussion on the classes for the next Olympics, the future of Para World Sailing and the Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards.

Even these events will no doubt fail to intrude on the world media interest in the Trump v Clinton battle or the British agonising over the will they, won't they Brexit.

Something that just might make the sport pages - in France at least - will be the start on Sunday of the of the eighth edition of the Vendée Globe, the solo non-stop around the world race from Les Sables-d'Olonne.

While the French will be following a host of potential winners, we Brits will put all our hopes on one man - Alex Thompson on the always stylish Hugo Boss.

Cast in the Tim Henman rather than the Andy Murray mode, we will be preying that the ability, the equipment and the necessary luck can finally come together.

Sunday at 12.02 hr UTC, the 29 solo skippers will start to the non-stop round-the-world race, the Vendée Globe - Live here on Sailweb.
