America's Cup gets a new Island

The America’s Cup Event Authority (ACEA) has moved into property construction, not just any old property, a new island off Bermuda.

Cross Island is reclaimed land situated in the Royal Naval Dockyard, Bermuda.

The new nine-acres of land will be used for the 2017 America’s Cup event village, however the chosen design from submitted ideas will be the new result after the 35th America’s Cup is complete.

The site had initially been earmarked for a marina after the America's Cup, with facilities for Marine and Ports and a marine college, but a court judgment overturned that intended end use.

Since then, a committee has been seeking input from the public.

Other suggestions received inclue: a three-star hotel, youth hostel, sailing school and water sports centre, restaurant and apartments.

Next AC World Series event is in Fukuoka, Japan from 19 to 20 November 2016.
