EUROSAF fills the gap

EUROSAF completes its resurgence as a force in top level dinghy sailing with the release of its 2013 Events Calendar. Following changes to the ISAF World Cup series for Olympic and Paralympic classes, which dropped three of the regular european events - Medemblik, Weymouth and Kiel - EUROSAF has picked up the baton and organised a Champions Sailing Cup for Olympic Classes at those venues in 2013.In addition, the second edition of the EUROSAF Youth Sailing, European Championship, is being held in Tavira Portugal in August and a series of continental match racing championships - the Open, Women's and Youth - will be held in St Petersburg RUS, Gdynia POL and Konstanz GER, respectively. There is also a new variation of an event first held in September 2012, when they will be holding the first Club Championship of Europe, in Lelystad, Holland.

The NOR for the first Champions Sailing Cup events could make interesting reading as EUROSAF have hinted at the introduction of the rather radical concept of, "The boat winning the final race will win the gold medal".

This not a traditional method of deciding champions in fleet sailing series, so it will be interesting to see what they come up with. The danger is that the events become a glorified team racing format, with lots of short races and repechage rounds, destroying any sense of continuity for competitors and spectators alike. To date EUROSAF has not replied to requests for information as to the actual method of scoring/knockout system to be used.
