ISAF confirmed Miami as the North American venue for the revamped Olympic classes World Cup regatta.
The regular USA venue will be the second stop in the 2012-2013 series following the opening regatta in Melbourne, Australia and preceding Palma, Spain and Hyeres, France. ISAF is seeking to spread the top class Olympic series more widely and has reduced the Europe based events. An Asian event, which will take place in China, is to be announced.
The dumping of established European events followed an acrimonious bidding process and led to the formation of a new series of championship regattas in Europe under the EUROSAF banner. Starting in May 2013 the EURSAF circuit will include a new regatta at Riva del Garda in Italy, then Medemblik in the Netherlands, Weymouth, United Kingdom, Kiel in Germany and finish at another new regatta in La Rochelle, France. All of which will qualify towards the ISAF fleet racing ranking system.
The first event of the new-look ISAF World Cup series, starting December 2, 2012, will be the Sail Melbourne Cup. From entries received to date this looks to be a mainly Aussie affair, with little overseas participation. With Olympic sailors still celebrating (or recovering) from the London Games this was never going to be a must-do event. Team GBR is absent and can be expected to concentrate resources on the Europe circuit and major championships in 2013 as they start to rebuild the new team, following the changes to Olympic classes and expected retirement of the old guard.
