Sail for Gold in search for sponsors

Entries for the 2013 Sail For Gold Regatta have now opened as the organisers, the RYA and WPNSA, continue their search for sponsorship, following the pull-out of Skandia, the long time event backer this year. Weymouth and Portland Borough Council has also baulked at WPNSA's request for a grant for the regatta - the nation’s only international Olympic-class regatta. In 2012 the Sail for Gold event received up to £175,000 from UK Sport.

Sail for Gold is no longer an ISAF World Cup event. It is now the third of five events in the newly-formed EUROSAF Champions Sailing Cup series, formed to provide competition for Olympic and Paralympic classes in Europe following the reduction of ISAF World Cup events to just two in Europe.

The event forms the first step on the long competition road to the Games in Rio 2016 for the many new crews hoping to replace the old guard, who seem to have lost the cutting edge after years of successful medal winning - just one Olympic sailing gold in 2012 the lowest since Atlanta 1996.

Entries received before the 10 May 2013 will qualify for the early entry fee. All other on-line entries must be received no later than 31 May 2013. The event is open to sailors from all Olympic and Paralympic disciplines.

For Sponsorship opportunities, interested parties should contact Tim Hall at Tim.hall@rya.org.uk
