One of the world’s largest Special Economic Zones, Duqm, to the southeast of Oman, is to sponsor a second Oman Sail Extreme Sailing team for the inaugural race of the Extreme Sailing Series that kicks off in Muscat on Tuesday (5 March).
Team Duqm Oman skippered by well-known UK sailor Rob Greenhalgh will take up the invitational team slot that the Extreme Sailing Series offers to each host venue and will pit two Omani teams together against some of the world’s best sailors.

The Team Duqm Oman crew includes skipper Rob Greenhalgh, Nasser Al Mashari who has been racing as the bowman on the Extreme 40s for two years, Will Howden (GBR), Bleddyn Mon (GBR) and Andrew Walsh (GBR).
Oman Sail CEO, David Graham added his welcome to the Duqm Special Economic Zone integrated project: “Our two projects, Oman Sail and the Duqm Special Economic Zone share mutual visions to rekindle this country’s proud maritime heritage while creating employment and a skilled Omani workforce. We are both seeking to put Oman and Duqm on the map. Our presence in this sport goes from strength to strength every year from both a competitive and a business point of view. This year we have a third Omani sailor joining the ranks of our Ex40 sailors and we are proud to welcome Duqm onboard.”
Racing starts on 5 March and concludes on the 8 March in Muscat. The 2012 Extreme Sailing Series Champion, The Wave, Muscat returns with Leigh McMillan (GBR) at the helm, Hashim Al Rashdi (OMA) on the bow, Ed Smyth (NZL) doing tactics, Pete Greenhalgh (GBR) trimming the mainsail and newcomer to the team Musab Al Hadi (OMA) trimming the headsail.
