Rodion Luka takes lead at UON SB20 Worlds

Current SB20 European champions, Russian Oleg Zherebtsov, his helm, former 49er World Champion Rodion Luka, and their 470 crew on Raketa have taken the lead at the UON SB20 Worlds after two more races. A win and a third on day two put them comfortably at the top of the Hamilton Island series pointscore, the only team with a single figure scoreline. Britain's Ben Saxton dropped to second, tied on points with Australia's Glen Bourke. Defending champion Geoff Carveth was on top form with a second and a race win taking him to fourth overall and well placed when the discard kicks in.

The lighter breezes and one of the biggest tides of the year combined to create tricky conditions for the 42 crews and the race management team who were kept busy setting and re-setting fair courses.

Quality showed through and the top group is taking shape with Saxton, who scored a ninth and an 11th keeping in touch with his two race wins from the opening day. Also in the frame is Australian Glen Bourke, who broke into the top three in race four to tie with Saxton for second overall.

Geoff Carveth was back on form with the best performance of the day. “Today we had a clearer idea what was going on in the bay, and a bit of a theory,” said Carveth. “Yesterday I broke the start and I think I was tired from performing major surgery on the boat the day before after we ripped the side of the keel. We had a decent start in race four, we stuck to our guns and we gradually picked off our opposition.”

On the plan for the remainder of the week, Carveth says it’s all about the starts. “All I want is to be on the start line going fast, after that we can do the rest. It’s easier said than done though; you need some luck on your side”.

Day 3 forecast is for similar conditions with Monday a planned layday before the final deciding half of the UON SB20 World Championships.
