SB20 Worlds expect stormy week

The Audi SB20 World Championships get underway at Hyeres, France from Monday with 90 entries, representing 15 nations taking part. It could be a shock start for the competitors as a 20-30 kn Mistral is forecast. Seventeen entries from Britain are taking part. Geoff Carveth won the 2012 event on count back, leaving Glenn Bourke (AUS) and Rodion Luka (UKR) in respective second and third places. Carveth will not defend his title due to the imminent arrival of his first child and Bourke has not made the journey from Australia.

Rodion Luka will compete with a newly formed crew of past members of Luka’s “Team Russia” and new addition Igor Matvienko, 470 class gold medal winner at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996. “It is going to be very tactical racing in such a big fleet, we must start well. The fleet has a lot of quality, there are many good teams,” explained Luka, who went on to add, “but I have a dream team, my best ever SB20 crew. We will have no excuses!”
